Contact Lawmakers
Tell lawmakers in your state or province, and in Congress or Parliament, to oppose permanent DST and to restore permanent Standard Time. Essentially that is all you need to ask, but do also say why if you wish.
States and provinces can restore permanent Standard Time right now! Federal permission is already granted for permanent Standard Time (permanent DST is federally forbidden in the US). Arizona, Hawaii, and all US territories happily restored permanent Standard Time decades ago.
Be specific about permanent Standard Time! Many lawmakers assume “end DST” means “end clock changes”, without realizing that permanent DST is slower and more expensive than permanent Standard Time, and without realizing permanent DST is more harmful than clock changes.
In the US:
- Contact your state and congressional lawmakers (three options):
- The American Academy of Sleep Medicine will send a pre-written letter to your three members of Congress. Just click “Tell Congress to Stop the Clock!”, enter your contact info, and click “Send Message”. Please consider contacting your state lawmakers separately if you use this option.
- Resistbot is automated. Text the word RESIST to its Twitter, Messenger, Telegram, or to 50409, and follow its instructions to tell your STATE and CONGRESS to restore permanent Standard Time.
- 270toWin finds your state and congressional lawmakers for you to write and/or call individually with your request to restore permanent Standard Time.
- Write the congressional committees where permanent-DST bills await hearing. Tell the Senate Commerce Committee to oppose S 670. Tell the House Energy Committee to oppose HR 1556, HR 1601, and HR 2389.
- Watch for congressional hearings in the Senate Commerce and House Energy calendars for those bills, and testify against them if a date is announced.
- Contact your state legislature to watch for local bills and committee hearings. Many states’ websites offer searches and notifications for bills and committees, which can be found by an internet search.
- Get to know your lawmakers. Personal relationships make big differences! Attend their town halls, request personal meetings, and inspire your lawmakers to restore permanent Standard Time.
In Canada:
- Contact your MLA and MP. Open North finds them for you to write and/or call with your request to restore permanent Standard Time.
- Contact your legislative assembly to watch for local bills and committee hearings. Some provinces’ websites offer searches and notifications for bills and committees, which can be found by an internet search.
- Get to know your lawmakers. Personal relationships make big differences! Attend their town halls, request personal meetings, and inspire your lawmakers to restore permanent Standard Time.
Write to Newspapers
Letters to the editors and op-ed articles are another way to get lawmakers’ attention. They can also get journalists’ attention, raise public awareness, and counteract misinformation from DST proponents.
Be specific about permanent Standard Time! Many members of the press assume “end DST” means “end clock changes”, without realizing that permanent DST is slower and more expensive than permanent Standard Time, and without realizing permanent DST is more harmful than clock changes.
Letters (emails or form submissions) can come from anyone, and their content is brief (such as 250 words or fewer). Op-eds are reserved for persons of note or letter (per each publisher’s discretion), and their content can be longer (such as 650 words).
Be polite and to-the-point in your writing. For verification purposes, include your full name, phone number, email address, and city of residence (only your name and city are published).

Send Sponsors & Build the Board
Save Standard Time was founded in June of 2019 as a nonprofit, nonpartisan, single-issue effort to preserve and extend the observation of geographically appropriate Standard Time. Its operations are largely administered by its San Francisco–based founder, in consultation with allies across North America. Save Standard Time’s focus is the United States and Canada, with support provided to other nations as time and funds permit. Save Standard Time seeks to expand advocacy efforts for healthier and safer Standard Time, to replace bills for permanent DST with bills for permanent Standard Time, and to restore permanent Standard Time across North America.
A great amount of ongoing time is required to research history, follow news updates, read draft legislation, index articles and studies, update this website and its corresponding social media, compose letters and emails, make phone calls, discuss issues with experts in relevant fields of study, travel to and meet with legislators, and keep track of all progress. Save Standard Time also has financial costs, such as printing, postage, mailbox rental, website hosting, travel, and bookkeeping. DST and permanent DST are supported by billion-dollar lobbyists from special-interest corporations. Save Standard Time is supported by volunteer work and donated funds, primarily from its founder.
Formal incorporation as a registered nonprofit is under consideration; however, such a move requires greater funding and additional board members. For those interested in financial contribution, donations can be placed via the links below. If you have suggestions for (or would like to volunteer as) an angel investor, nonprofit sponsor, or board member, please email info@SaveStandardTime.com.
Thank you for your interest in and support of Standard Time! We wish you bright, healthy days and dark, restful nights.
